Don't set a resolution, try this!

If you missed our intention setting class, here's the formula to fulfill your wishes on 2017.

There is a palpable energy to the New Year, and this energy brings forth a seed of transformation. Being caught up on our ego, senses and conditioning we set resolutions to change not just what we do but who we are. We say “I will.”

Through yoga I have learned that the shift in perspective from “I will” to “Thy will” brings peace into my living. The surrender of my desire to a higher power creates non attachment to the results of my intentions. Without that perspective, resolutions tend to fail because they start from the assumption that who we are is not good enough, and reinforce the mistaken belief that our happiness depends on acquiring what we want.

The radical premise that we're already complete and whole to fulfill our life’s purpose changes resolutions into intentions. All we need to do is focus our mind, realize our deepest heartfelt desires, and connect to the divine energy within.

How does the power within us channel what we want? Deepak Chopra in The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success says  “We have a nervous system that is capable of becoming aware of the energy and informational content of that field. We experience this field subjectively as our thoughts, feelings, emotions desires instinct & drives.” The information exchange happening within our nervous system is capable of broadcasting our heartfelt intentions onto the universe setting a vibration that can be received by another person understanding that message (consciously or unconsciously) to bring us what we need to fulfill our intentions and life’s purpose. Remember the energy you felt at the turning of the year? It's the best example of this experience.

Intention then becomes a commitment we make to support our highest truth. It becomes a statement we can call upon to remind us of our true nature and guide our choices. It informs us of the action we’re willing to take into the world.

Deepak Chopra writes, “This conscious change is brought about by the two qualities inherent in consciousness: attention and intention. Attention energizes, and intention transforms. Whatever you put your attention on will grow stronger in your life. Whatever you take your attention away from will wither, disintegrate and disappear. Intention on the other hand, triggers transformation of energy and information. Intention organizes its own fulfillment.”

“Intention is the real power behind desire. Intent alone is very powerful, because intent is desire without attachment to the outcome. Desire alone is weak, because desire in most people is attention with attachment”

Look forward into the year and ask yourself what specific things need to happen to move you forward on your path. Your specific intention will describe what you need to do, and where you need to direct your energy, to make progress on your larger life goals. “What do I really want?” simply start where you are. Any goal can be the start, even a one that might be interpreted as simple or shallow can point you into the direction of your life’s purpose. It might arise out of conditioning, but if you trust “Thy Will” and keep following the heart’s desire, it will take you to the essence of your being by asking yourself what’s underneath it.

Start with a goal, for example, by March, I seek a 3 bedroom apartment in close proximity to the studio, low maintenance on the outside and with pleasing aesthetics, access to a pool is a big plus. This might seem like a typical craigslist posting, but it’s much more than that.

Next, I imagine how life will be and think how I will feel as a result of it manifesting in my life.  Is it a sense of self-love, physical well-being, or freedom? What is the feeling I’m striving for? What is the longing in the heart that is pointing me in this direction?

Going a little deeper, I ask myself what desire that behavior is currently trying to satisfy. Am I seeking peace of mind, freedom from pain, or the feeling of being accepted?  See if you can find a deeper hunger, a longing that’s asking to be nourished. That hunger may point you toward what the heart really yearns for.

For me this intention is about creating harmony and freedom. It satisfies my life’s purpose by supporting me in the stage of my life that I’m currently in: creating a studio, a community and nurturing well-being for my family.

If your desire is at the physical level like quitting smoking or wanting to get fit or lose weight, as you work with it, you’ll start to feel a deeper desire, such as, ‘I want to take care of my body.’ Later in life, the intention might transform into, ‘I love my body,’ or even ‘I am love itself.’ The evolution of the intention still contains the same feeling tone and it makes it sustainable for a lifetime.
